Cookie Policy

Last updated: 8 April 2026

1. About this policy

This policy explains what cookies PlayChess uses, why we use them, and your rights under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) and UK GDPR. For broader information about how we use your personal data, see our Privacy Policy.

2. What cookies are

Cookies are small files stored on your device when you visit a website. They allow the website to recognise your device and remember certain information across page loads or sessions. Not all cookies are the same — some are essential for the service to function; others are used for optional purposes such as analytics or advertising.

3. Cookies used by PlayChess

PlayChess uses only strictly necessary cookies. We do not use advertising cookies, tracking cookies, analytics cookies, or any third-party cookies.

playchess.uk (this website)

The public marketing site (playchess.uk) does not set any cookies. No login functionality exists on this site.

4. Why we do not show a cookie consent banner

Under PECR Regulation 6(4)(b), cookies that are strictly necessary for a service explicitly requested by the user do not require consent. Both cookies listed above are strictly necessary:

  • They are set only when you actively sign in to the platform — you explicitly request the authenticated service.
  • They are used solely to maintain your session and complete the login securely. They are not used for analytics, advertising, or cross-site tracking.
  • Removing them would make the service non-functional (you could not stay signed in).

This position is consistent with ICO cookies guidance. We keep our cookie use under review. If we ever introduce non-essential cookies, we will update this policy and add a consent mechanism before doing so.

5. Third-party cookies

We do not embed third-party content (such as YouTube videos, social media widgets, or advertising pixels) that would set cookies on our pages. No third-party cookies are set when you use PlayChess.

6. Your choices

Because we only use strictly necessary cookies, blocking or deleting them will affect your ability to use the platform — you will not be able to stay signed in. You can manage cookies through your browser settings, but please be aware of this impact.

Most browsers allow you to: view cookies stored by a site, delete individual cookies or all cookies, and block cookies from specific sites or all sites. For instructions, refer to your browser's help documentation.

7. Changes to this policy

We will update this page if we change how we use cookies. The “last updated” date at the top reflects the current version.
